Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. The connection with Sanskrit व्याघ्र (vyāghra, tiger) is untenable for formal reasons. Wackernagel hesitatingly supposed that a neuter ὦχρος (ôkhros) replaced an older *ὦχος (*ôkhos), like αἶσχος (aîskhos) to αἰσχρός (aiskhrós) and ψῦχος (psûkhos) to ψυχρός (psukhrós).
