Etymology

From Semitic, compare Hebrew גְּלוֹם (glōm, “wrap, mantle, cloak”), Late Babylonian 𒌆𒄖𒇷𒉡 (TUG₂.gu-li-nu /⁠gulīnu, gulēnu, gulānu⁠/, “over-cloak, coat”) likely a West-Semitic loan, Aramaic גְלִימָא (glīmā, “wrap, mantle, cloak”), whence also χλᾰνῐ́ς (khlanís, “upper-garment of wool”), χλαῖνᾰ (khlaîna, “upper-garment, cloak, wrapper”); innovating the δ-stem.
